DESPITE her love for textiles and fashion, Victoria and Albert Museum curator Edwina Ehrman had never longed to work on an exhibition about wedding dresses.

So when she joined London's prestigious museum in 2007 and was asked to take on exhibition, Unveiled: 200 years of wedding glamour, Ehrman had to be talked into the role, and soon became glad she did agree to it.

“I started to do some research and found there was a lot of hidden history there that needed unpicking.”

Unveiled looks at the history of the wedding dress, beginning in the 1820s when white had become the fashionable colour of choice for wealthy women and traces all the way through to present-day designs worn by celebrities.

“There were lots of reasons to include a dress, but one of my criteria was I wanted to know who wore it and find out as much as possible about this person, which in doing so helps bring the dress to life,” Ehrman said.

One such dress is the violet taffeta Vivienne Westwood couture gown worn by Dita Von Teese in her 2005 Irish wedding to Marilyn Manson.

Accessories include a beautiful tri-corned velvet hat with a fetching veil and mink pompoms created by British milliner Stephen Jones, Christian Louboutin shoes in matching dress fabric and a Mr Pearl custom-made corset petticoat – the biggest Ehrman has ever seen.

“We're incredibly grateful to Dita for lending us her dress as it's absolutely spectacular and provides a real wow factor toward the end of the exhibition,” the curator said.

“The best description of her was in American Vogue who said she was like an 18th century figure who'd come to life.”
